Get Thee to the Church: St. Luke's, Ocean City, Maryland

Looks can be deceiving. St. Luke's might be the most nondescript-looking Catholic church I've ever seen (well, except maybe St. Mary's in Blacksburg, before they moved into their newly-built one which is beautiful inside and out. I hope to get in there for some photos on a future visit.) I wasn't sure what I would find when I went through the doors--would it be as sterile and colorless as St. Mary's used to be?

Nope.

Since St. Luke's was only a five-minute walk from our condo, I decided to stroll over for their 9 am weekday Mass on Saturday morning. (My family was happy about that, because they didn't have to put up with me wandering around snapping photos before and after Mass on Sunday.) I loved the sunburst window right behind the altar.

There was no lack of statues here. (The one of Mary was beautiful but I forgot to take her picture. DOH!)

Does anyone know which saint this is? I'm clueless.

There were a number of statues placed in front of windows.

I always snap a photo of my favorite Station of the Cross: Station IV, Jesus Meets His Mother. It's become a habit.

Outside by the flagpole is a memorial to fallen soldiers. Each statue represents one branch of the armed services.

I posted a few photos and thoughts from our visit to Ocean City on Friday; click here to see those.

Tomorrow Larry starts high school and it's the first day of preschool. You might not hear from me for a while; although I hope to update my Cooking Nick's Books blog this week. Last night we returned from a whirlwind weekend in Baltimore for the first ever Indy Car street race there; I might be sharing some of those memories here soon. Happy Labor Day!

  1. Sharon, the mystery statue up there is St. Paul -- my eldest son's patron saint. :0) He's always shown with a bull and an open book, since he's one of the four evangelists. St. Paul rocks! :0)

~ Lisa (at "Are We There Yet?) who apparently can't sign in on the Google account for some strange reason. :0/

  2. AH, yes, I think I've read that before. We have a new image of St. Paul in our church with an open book; I should take a closer look at it to see if there's a bull there too. Sorry about not being able to sign in; that's happened to people before (including me). Not sure why.

  3. The four evangelists are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The four of them did have their respective symbols. The one with the bull is St. Luke.

  5. Hello Sharon, I was looking for the Ash Wednesday schedule for all the local churches today and noticed your blog. My name is Cynthia Gallagher and I designed, fabricated and installed the Stained Glass "SUNBURST" window. I have a picture that depicts the sparkle and colors a bit more, if you would like me to send it to you, I would be happy to share it. The inspiration actually came from the Pastor, Fr. Richard Smith. He described to me what he wanted to see. I designed three renditions for him and he chose this one. In 2009 the church was completely renovated. There was only a wall behind the altar before the renovation. For 29 years I have been creating stained glass for churches. I now work throughout the US visiting churches in need of restoration and new window design. My passion for the art of stained glass windows, comes from my love of Jesus.

  6. Wow, Cynthia, I'm excited that you found this post! The window certainly is beautiful, as is the entire church. I would love to see a more detailed picture of the window. Would it be OK with you if I shared it sometime on my new blog? I don't write on this one anymore, my new one is http://eatingslowly.wordpress.com/. I don't have many chances to update it, but I post there from time to time. If you'd rather not have me share any of your photos that's fine, but I'd love to see them anyway! :)

    Thanks for visiting!
